Time to Support Unpaid Carers

The Liberal Democrats are calling for more support for people who act as unpaid carers, providing care for relatives or loved ones, and who rely on the Carer’s Allowance to support themselves.

Liberal Democrat Leader Ed Davey MP – who was an unpaid carer for his mother when he was younger – believes it is time these carers were given a cash boost of £1,000.

Ed Davey said: “Many carers are facing extreme financial hardship, often relying on foodbanks to supplement the Carers’ Allowane of £67.25 per week to feed themselves and the people they care for.”

Local Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Campaigner Paul Kennedy added: “Unpaid carers are doing a remarkable job in very difficult circumstances. The Liberal Democrats are determined to stand up for them and to get them the support they deserve.”
