Working for Abinger / Wotton / Coldharbour

Our work has included:

Byways

Campaigned to prevent any-social driving on rural byways, promoting the closure of Wolvens Lane to 4×4 vehicles after the road was repaired, promoting the resurfacing of Holdenbrook, limiting access to byways across Ranmore, and seeking to prevent motorised vehicle access to Stane Street and Mickleham Downs.

Road Safety and Lower Speed Limits

Arranged for reduced speed limits on Hollow Lane / Leith Hill Road, Holmbury Lane, on Ranmore Common Road, and on the A25 between the villages.

Arranged for lower “realistic” speed limits through Abinger Common village (20mph) and Walliswood village (30mph) and backed the residents’ campaign to reduce the speed limit in Forest Green.

Promoted safety along the A25, arranging for the pedestrian island at Wotton and the vehicle activated sign at Abinger Hammer.

Arranged for the signs showing that residents will be walking in the road and additional white lines in front of the cottages to alert drivers to the residential nature of this stretch of road – hopefully reducing traffic speeds – and for “slow” signs to be painted on the corner near Abinger Bottom.

Village Gateways, Brickworks Signage, & Road Signs

Introduced the village gateways at Okewood Hill and Walliswood.

Arranged for the agreed route for HGVs to and from the Ewhurst brickworks to be clearly signposted.

Arranged for road name sign by West Lane together with directions to the National Trust Car Park on White Down Lane and for the broken wooden fingerposts across the Leith Hill area to be replaced.

Arranged for the missing chevrons on White Down lane to be replaced and for the signage to be improved at this hairpin bend given that the crash barriers had collapsed (and arranged removed removal of the broken crash barriers).

Control of HGVs

Arranged for width restrictions in Coldharbour Lane and Ruckmans Lane to discourage HGV access, for “unsuitable for HGV signs to be erected on roads around Leith Hill, for HGV routing signs to be installed to direct lorries onto the agreed route to the brickworks, and promoted the SatNav services that helps residents direct HGVs away from unsuitable rural roads.

Cycling – Olympic Legacy

Worked to create an effective Olympic Legacy, funding safety features on the Leith Hill mountain bike trail, limiting closed road cycle events to one per year in the area, and lobbying for the regulation of sportives.

Ensured that the Surrey Cycling Strategy recognises that there are a range of opinions about the benefits and negative consequences of cycling and seeks to address the issues caused by both sport cycling and mountain biking.

Whilst the RideLondon used Surrey roads, ensured that the PruRideLondon Organisers recognised that the roads remained open to pedestrians during the event (except when the roads are controlled by the police whilst the professional peloton passes) and that competitors and marshals were properly briefed and could anticipate that pedestrians would be using the road during the event.

Road and Pavement Resurfacing

Ensured that Lyefield Lane, Sheephouse Green, parts of Hollow Lane, Raikes Lane and Hackhurst Lane, Hogden Lane, Abinger Common Road, Tanhurst Lane, Abinger Bottom and the road through Coldharbour were resurfaced.

Arranged for the footpath between Wotton and Raikes Lane to be “dug out” and reinstated – the work still needs to be extended at either end between Westcott and Wotton and along to Abinger Hammer.

Arranged for new white lines to be painted along the sides of Abinger Road to promote road safety and for new lines along the edge of the road in Coldharbour village to reduce traffic speeds through the village.

Arranged for a new footpath to be installed on the south side of the A25 from Paddington Farm to Abinger Hammer village.

Landslip

Arranged for a significant part of Abinger Road to be resurfaced and for the white lines at the side of the road to be renewed on the remaining section of the road.

Ensured the County Council funded the repairs to Mosses Wood Road after the landslip, ensuring the road linking Coldharbour to Leith Hill was reopened.

Flood Prevention

Arranged for flood prevention measures (improved ditching) to take place in Raikes Lane, Abinger Lane, Cotton Row and Holmbury Lane.

Save Our Post Office Campaign

Played a leading role in the campaign to save Abinger Hammer Post Office.

A25 Grass Cutting

Held the County and District Councils to account for the failed grass cutting on the footpath between Abinger and Westcott – ensuring that the grass was cut and the path made passable when the contractors failed to carry out the work as scheduled.

Arranged for the path between Wotton and Raikes Lane to be dug out so that pedestrians could walk along the path.

Decluttering Our Countryside

Promoted the scheme to remove unnecessary roadsigns on our rural lanes.

Fly-Tipping

Regularly (unfortunately) reported fly-tipping in our country lanes to the District Council and ensured that the rubbish was removed. Successfully campaigned for CCTV to be introduced in remote rural areas where fly-tipping is prevalent to act as a deterrent to further fly-tipping.

Schools Review – to Promote Abinger Common School

Initiated the Schools Review which safeguarded the future of  the Abinger Common School site through the creation of the amalgamated Surrey Hills School.

22 Bus Service

Promoted the new 22 Bus service as a local bus service to maintain a service to Holmbury St Mary and Abinger Common and campaigned against the withdrawal of the Saturday service.

Oil Drilling

Campaigned against oil drilling in Coldharbour, taking a leading role in opposing the traffic management plan, speaking at both public enquiries and at County Hall and opposing the second planning application for additional buildings and fencing.

Post Box

Ensured the post box at Okewood Hill was replaced when it disappeared.

Walliswood Culvert

Held the County Council to account over the failed work at the Walliswood Culvert.

Projects Funded from Local Allocation

Arranged funding from her Local Allocation to help fund many projects, including the repair of the Abinger Hammer Clock, the refurbishment of the Evelyn Hall, the resurfacing of the entrance to Oakwood Hill Village Hall, the installation of an external water supply to Walliswood Village Hall, a new shed for storage nest to Wotton Village Hall, the refurbishment of the outside play area at Surrey Hills School with a canopy for shade, the renovation of the stocks at Abinger Common, the provision of new doors and the restoration of the commemorative plaques on the wall of Forest Green Village Hall, the enhancement of the play area at Walliswood, chairs for Forest Green Village Hall, the shutter to the bar at Oakwood Hill Cricket Club, new cricket nets for Forest Green Cricket Club and Abinger Hammer Cricket Club, and additional grit bins in the Leith Hill and Coldharbour area.

Grit Bins

Ensured a number of new grit bins in the Leith Hill area and at William Evelyn Cottages and ensured that all were filled when a number were removed from the County Council supported grit bin list.

Road Gritting

Extended the road gritting route to cover Coldharbour Lane up to The Plough and the Church.

Blocked Drains

Ensured that blocked drains in Okewood Hill, Coldharbour and Leith Hill were cleared and that the drains were added to the asset register and the cyclical cleaning programme.

    DEAR HAZEL,
THERE IS A PLANNING APPLICATION SUBMITTED BY A DEVELOPER
TO BUILD A THREE STOREY HOUSE AT THE REAR OF 13/14 HORSHAM RD. DORKING.
AN APPLICATION FOR THIS SITE HAS BEEN MADE 5 TIMES AND REFUSED BY THE COUNCIL EVERY TIME, EXCEPT THIS LATEST TIME THE PLANNING DEPARTMENT HAS RECOMMENDED APPROVAL YET THE FOOTPRINT TO HOUSE IS THE SAME.
THEY APPEAR TO HAVE DISREGARDED ALL LOCAL OBJECTIONS TO THIS.
COULD YOU READ PLANNING DEPT. LETTER TO COUNCIL AND ENSURE THEY ARE AWARE OF THE MANY OBJECTIONS.

Many thanks for bringing this to my attention.

I have looked carefully at this planning application and all the letters of objection are clearly set out on the District Council’s planning portal and will be available for all members of the District Council Development Control Committee to see before they determine the planning application.

I also understand that the Council’s Officers are likely to be robustly questioned by the DC Committee before the decision is made.

      Best Regards.

      Hazel.
